_Analyzing big data about the brain leads to the first new perspective on neuroanatomy in 100 years
__Among the most complex structures in the universe, the average brain
contains about 100 billion specialized cells called neurons—as many
cells as stars in the Milky Way— linked by 150 trillion or so
connections known as synapses.
Now, through combining data sets with other researchers, and developing more sophisticated data analysis techniques, scientists are, for the first time able to document the basic wiring of the brain, and the complex relationships among billions of neurons that are responsible for reason, memory and emotion.
The completion of this work will have profound effects on the understanding of schizophrenia, autism, multiple sclerosis and other disorders.
